How Often Should You Cut and Color Your Hair?

Our luxury haircut and color salon in NYC can help you maintain beautiful, healthy hair.

One of the most common questions we get asked as a luxury NYC hair salon is how often should you cut and color your hair? In this blog post, we’ll explore the answer to this question and how regular salon visits can keep your hair healthy.

How Often Should You Cut Your Hair?

Haircut needs will depend largely on your hair type, length, and style. As a general rule, we typically recommend our clients to get a trim at least every 2-3 months. If you have short hair or a style that requires more maintenance, your trims will need to occur more often, likely once a month. On the other hand, a longer hairstyle or low maintenance cut can probably be stretched out to around 3-6 months.

Regular trims are important for hair care because they help prevent split ends and breakage. These two problems can lead to dull and lifeless hair. Additionally, regular trims can keep your hair’s shape and style looking fresh and well-maintained.

If you’re trying to grow your hair out, you may be hesitant to get regular trims. However, it’s important to keep in mind that skipping trims altogether can actually hinder hair growth. This is caused by split ends traveling up the hair shaft and causing damage. Opt instead for a dusting or small trim to maintain healthy ends while allowing your hair to grow.

How Often Should You Color Your Hair?

The answer to this question is also going to depend on a few factors, namely the type of color treatment you are receiving, your hair’s natural color and texture, and how quickly your hair grows. Generally, we recommend a color appointment every 4-6 weeks to maintain your desired look.

If you have a lot of gray hair or your natural hair color is significantly different from the color you’re trying to achieve, you may need slightly more frequent appointments.

If you’re getting highlights or lowlights, you may be able to stretch out the time between color treatments to 8-12 weeks. This is because highlights and lowlights are usually added to specific sections of hair, rather than the entire head. As a result, the new growth that appears will be less noticeable and your color will look more natural for a longer period of time.

It’s important to keep in mind that coloring your hair too frequently can damage your hair and cause it to become dry and brittle. If you’re coloring your hair every 4-6 weeks, be sure to use a deep conditioning treatment regularly to keep your hair looking healthy and shiny.
